Originally released in November of 1972, the Edgar Winter Group's double platinum record They Only Come Out at Night broke new ground with Winter's legendary synthesizer sound and became one of rock's classic records of all time, containing 2 of rock'n'roll's most notable anthems, the free-spirited “Free Ride” and the ultimate jam tune “Frankenstein.” Produced by Rick Derringer with Ronnie Montrose on guitars and engineered by Bill Szymczyk who later produced Hotel California and other Eagle hits, They Only Come Out at Night didn't gain immediate commercial success. Winter and the band thought the song “Free Ride” was the most commercially feasible tune and after a disappointing brief appearance on the charts the band started talking about their next project. Meanwhile, a grass roots phenomenon was spreading across the country. Underground college FM stations all across the US discovered a b-side tune called “Frankenstein.” Winter and his band mates basically had a great time jamming on “Frankenstein” but never considered the over 4 minute tune to be commercially viable. “Frankenstein” was soon one of the most frequently requested songs on mainstream AM stations and astonishingly climbed to #1 on the charts! The album reached the #3 position and the re-released “Free Ride” reached #14.

Rocky Mountain Way," the tune that opens Joe Walsh's sophomore release (and remains one of his best-known songs), is a textbook example of Walsh's strengths. The song is driven by a slinky hard rock groove that boasts crunchy, distorted guitars, barrelhouse piano, wiry solos, and a catchy, singalong chorus--proving Walsh's penchant for mixing rock elements and radio-ready accessibility with a sense of wit and fun. The rest of SMOKER YOU DRINK, PLAYER YOU GET follows suit, with the mid-tempo rock ballad "Bookends," the bouncy, Latin-tinged "Happy Ways," and the airy, wistful "Dreams" keeping the stylistic mix lively.

Walsh is flanked here by Kenny Pasarelli on bass and Joe Vitale on drums, keyboards, and flute. Production help from Bill Szymczyk helps give the record its signature sound--simultaneously chunky and slick--and brings the effects-heavy sound of Walsh's guitar to the fore. But this is ultimately Walsh's show: he knows how to rock, lilt, and craft a pop hook, all the while maintaining levity with his off-hand vocal delivery and playful lyrics. SMOKER YOU DRINK, PLAYER YOU GET is a solid slice of FM rock fare, and is still one of the standouts in Walsh's solo discography.

The Black Keys--The Big Come Up [2002] 1st

As minimal two-man blues-rock bands go, this has to be near the top of the heap. The problem with minimal two-man blues-rock outfits (and there have been more of them than you think) is that they're, well, usually too minimal, with thin garage sound and a shortage of variety. The Black Keys' sound, impressively, is not too thin (though it is garage-ish), and there's enough deft incorporation of funk, soul, and hard rock into the harsh juke joint-ish core to avoid monotony. Most importantly, Dan Auerbach has a genuinely fine, powerful blues voice, sometimes approximating a white, slightly smoother Howlin' Wolf (particularly on the opener, "Busted"). Auerbach's a good guitarist, too, conjuring suitably harsh and busy (and sometimes heavily reverbed) riffs out of what sounds like a cheap but effectively harsh amp. Patrick Carney's drums might be the cruder component of this two-man band, but they keep the sound earthy without sounding sloppily punkish for the hell of it, as too many such groups searching for the blues-punk fusion do. The very occasional insertion of hip-hop snippets seems neither here nor there, and the cover of the Beatles' "She Said, She Said" seems like an odd choice. But overall it's quite cool raunchy electric blues with more vigor and imagination than similarly raw, elderly Southern juke joint artists who came into vogue starting in the 1990s. And it's way fresher than the standard bar band blues-rockers with slicker execution and more reverence for blues clichés

The years leading up to In Step weren’t kind to Vaughan. In terms of deserved critical praise, yes. And in terms of continually hitting giant artistic strides, certainly. But Vaughan became mired in a haze of whiskey and cocaine, getting sucked into a downward spiral that culminated with him collapsing on a London stage in 1986 and coming close to death. After checking himself in for treatment, embracing the 12-step program, and finally kicking his vices, Vaughan returned with a vengeance on In Step, the first record he made sober.

Blue Murder--Blue Murder [1989]

After helping singer David Coverdale reinvent Whitesnake both sonically and aesthetically for the image-conscious American market, guitar hero John Sykes acrimoniously left the group when it became apparent that there was only room enough for one overblown ego in it: Coverdale's. Hardly ones to let a good thing slip away, though, the executives at Whitesnake's label, Geffen Records (specifically A&R super-guru John Kalodner), immediately signed Sykes to a new development deal and proceeded to aid and abet him in founding his own supergroup, Blue Murder, with veteran bassist Tony Franklin and nearly geriatric drummer Carmine Appice (whose career probably started before Sykes was even born!). Released in 1989, the power trio's eponymous debut was produced to pompous perfection by none other than Bob Rock, whose golden ears for bombastic yet consumer-friendly '80s metal were truly second to none at the time -- other than the one and only Mutt Lange, of course. And perhaps more than any of Rock's jobs prior to his hook-up with Metallica, Blue Murder proves it, thanks to songs ranging from muscular power-chord hell-fests like "Riot" and "Blue Murder"; to blues-inflected fare like "Jelly Roll" (whose video was soon all over MTV); to the all-important, overly lush (and frankly not all that good) power ballad "Out of Love." But the album has also become rather dated over the years, because of its frequent indulgence in the same sort of unchecked, peroxide-fueled "Bad Zeppelin-isms" that were then being shamelessly appropriated by bands like Kingdom Come and Sykes' own former boss, David Coverdale, and the reborn Whitesnake. As such, prime offenders like the gratuitously preening "Sex Child," the impressively epic "Valley of the Kings," and the disappointingly tepid "Ptolemy" abused this ethically flawed (if unquestionably effective, from a sales standpoint) gimmick at its most grotesquely histrionic -- but no more so than any of the other groups cited above, really. And because Blue Murder's songwriting was relatively consistent and their musicianship beyond reproach throughout, it's easy to understand why this album has endured far better than most similarly styled heavy metal albums of the era.

Indigenous--The Acoustic Session [2010]

Some longtime fans may question whether it's ethical for Mato Nanji to keep using the Indigenous moniker now that he is the only remaining original member, his various siblings having vacated for whatever reason. Granted, Nanji has always been the prime mover of Indigenous, the chief songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and overall leader, so if anyone has the right to claim the name it would be him. Nonetheless, The Acoustic Sessions comes down to Mato, wife Leah Nanji on background vocals, producer/instrumentalist Jamie Candiloro, and violinist Lisa Germano, and with the track list drawn mostly from previous Indigenous albums it has the feel of a chapter end or a marker more than a new beginning. The stripped-down remakes of tunes like "Things We Do," "Rest of My Days," "Little Time," and "Want You to Say" often sound like demos rather than finished tracks, but at the same time there is a charm to these lighter-weight renditions. A relatively unaltered cover of "You Got It," the latter-day Roy Orbison gem, wraps things up and fits in well. Whether any of this is an indication of Indigenous' future direction, or even whether Nanji will keep the name going, remains to be seen, but as a stopgap in the catalog, The Acoustic Sessions is a worthwhile but not essential release.

Another very good blues/rock release.
For its major-label debut, the Native American quartet keeps its sound bulked up but stripped down. They haven't transcended their obvious Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan-isms, although there are also indications of Robin Trower and '70s power trio blues-rock outfits such as Cactus here as well. Guitarist/vocalist Mato Nanji stays entrenched in the spotlight, with his bass-playing brother, drumming sister, and a practically inaudible cousin on percussion contributing anonymous support. Nanji projects a powerful presence throughout; his dusky vocals are emotional without bombast and his fluid guitar jumps out of the murky mix like a lighthouse through the fog. Production by the British Davey Brothers (the Hoax) plays a substantial role, as they create a thick sonic soup, providing the band with a gutsy wall of sound. The basic tracks were cut live, adding a spark to the performances -- especially the slow blues of "I Wonder" that catches a particularly hot moment -- but some of these songs are not only similar to each other, they are reminiscent of standard blues-rockers in the catalogs of the band's obvious influences. So even though "Take Some Time" is an original, its unhurried shuffle sounds like any of a dozen songs in the Stevie Ray Vaughan catalog. A sledgehammer version of Jimmy Reed's "Shame Shame Shame" is the album's only official cover, though. As the disc progresses, the production and approach become repetitious, and the quality of the material declines. Still, for those who want to turn the volume up to 11, Indigenous competently fills the blues-rock bill.

Indigenous--Circle [2000]FLAC

This one topped the list of Billboard Top Ten blues albums for four months shortly after its release. It's hard to say that it belonged there, not because it isn't a fine record, but because it's more rock than blues. Circle was produced by Texas singer/songwriter Doyle Bramhall, who is perhaps best known for his work with Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's a solid release, but don't expect anything fancy. In fact, many of the songs on Circle tend to sound very similar -- and it doesn't help that some segue into the next one seamlessly, which only serves to accentuate their sameness and add to the predictability. Mato Nanji is a flawless guitar player, but his prowess here is slightly dampened by the acoustic guitar that lies a layer beneath some of the songs, resulting in less punch. His voice, however, is magnificent: full and haunting, not unlike that of Hootie & the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker.

[SPECIAL] THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMONS--S/T [2004]

After lending their respective talents to Diamond Dave and a world tour in support of that disc, the men in the Hideous Sun Demons step out from behind the shadows of David Lee Roth to deliver a scorching instrumental effort. Launched by the funk-fortified rocker, "Elevation," the Demons exhibit tremendous prowess and notable depth. Just check the bluesy workout "Rain," with the fiery fretwork of Toshi Hiketa rivaling another former Roth collaborator, Steve Vai. The inventive, jazzy feel of "Osaka Funk" and the frantic rhythmic pace of "Mosquito" both affirm the chops bassist James LoMenzo and drummer Ray Luzier behold. Glass Harp--Live at Beachland Ballroom [Nov1,2008]

Glass Harp is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative rock bands to have ever emerged from the Cleveland rock and roll scene. Formed in Youngstown in the late Sixties, the band – Phil Keaggy on guitar, Daniel Pecchio on bass and John Sferra on drums – was a power trio in the tradition of Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the James Gang. But the group – which is currently represented in the Museum’s Ohio exhibit -- went beyond the blues-based stylings of those bands to create a sound all their own. At the center of Glass Harp’s sound was Keaggy’s lyrical, inventive guitar playing. So admired was Keaggy that, when asked who his favorite guitarist was, Jimi Hendrix cited Phil Keaggy. Glass Harp released three critically acclaimed albums and was on the verge of breaking big on the national scene when, in 1972, Keaggy left the band to pusue a career in Christian music. Twenty-five years later, in January 1997, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened an exhibit called My Town, which focused on Cleveland’s rock and roll history. I contacted the band members, and they agreed to re-form the original Glass Harp for an appearance at the Museum. Since then, the band has reunited from time to time, playing various shows and festivals. In late 2008, I contacted the group again and asked them to play a benefit show at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland. The benefit was for an organization called Roots of American Music, which takes musicians from the Cleveland area into local schools to teach the students about the blues, folk music and other styles of music that played a role in the development of rock and roll. Glass Harp agreed to play the show on November 1, 2008, and it was amazing. I’ve seen the group countless times over the last 40 years, and this show ranked right up there with their very best. The band taped the concert ,and it has just been released on CD. Glass Harp Live at the Beachland Ballroom 11.01.08 is available on the group’s website. It’s worth checking out. This band is one of the best to ever emerge out of the Cleveland area, and it’s truly wonderful that they are once again back together and at the peak of their performing powers.

The guitarist of VULGAR UNICORN starts his solo career with this band, which is inspired as much by PORCUPINE TREE as by his old group. PINEAPPLE THIEF has a mix of prog with some space rock. Balance, beauty, and modernity are all to be found in the plush sounds of PINEAPPLE THIEF ... great melodies, songs and plenty of atmospheres. This band will appeal to fans of RADIOHEAD, but other occasional influences show through that are less obvious but apparent (PINK FLOYD, U2, OZRICS and KING CRIMSON).

With their second release, PINEAPPLE THIEF (PTh for short) have reached a state of grace with their frenzy guitar drawings and acoustic sets, using Mellotron to the better effect without ever sounding retro. Indeed, and more than with the two previous albums from PINEAPPLE THIEF, "Variations on a Dream" is brimming over with its creator's talent and is impressive with its incredible commercial potential. Thus, PTh has elaborated a "double layer album", in which the prog fan will enjoy the fine-tuned production and the arrangements, while the pop rock lovers will be delighted with accessible and addictive songs. This is the type of CD that one plays over again as soon as it ends. A little miracle of balance, and a place in my Top 5 for 2003.

Kevin Raleigh is an American singer and keyboardist best known for his tenure with the Michael Stanley Band.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 27, 1952,[1] Raleigh came to local prominence in 1969 with the band Paper Sun, later known as Freeport Express and Freeport. As Freeport, the band cut an album in Miami for Mainstream Records.[2]

In 1973, Raleigh was recruited by former Raspberries members Jim Bonfanti and Dave Smalley to join them in the band Dynamite, who cut an album of Smalley-Raleigh originals which was never released.

Raleigh would also be a member of Bonfanti's subsequent band, Pictures, formed in 1977. That same year he was in a band with Paper Sun/Freeport bandmate Roger Lewis and guitarist Neil Giraldo.

Raleigh first performed with the Michael Stanley Band when they toured behind their 1978 album Cabin Fever. His first recording with the band was Greatest Hints in 1978, on which he emerged—in tandem with Stanley—as their principal singer and songwriter.[3]

Remaining with MSB until its 1987 dissolution, Raleigh was responsible for several of MSB's most high-profile cuts, including "Someone Like You", "When I'm Holding You Tight" and the band's most successful single, "He Can't Love You", which peaked on the Hot 100 at #33 in 1980.[4]

Raleigh went on to record a solo album, Delusions of Grandeur, released on Atlantic Records in the spring of 1989. The album included two tracks, "I Should've Known Better" and "The Art of War", produced by Neil Giraldo, who had gone on to become Pat Benatar's guitarist, songwriter and husband. The track "Moonlight on Water"—one of only two of the album's ten tracks not written by Raleigh—was produced by Peter Coleman, who had also worked extensively with Benatar.[5]

Issued as a single, "Moonlight on Water" reached #60 on the Billboard Hot 100, but otherwise Raleigh's bid for a solo career was largely overlooked. (A 1990 version by Laura Branigan had a single release whose chart performance echoed that of Raleigh's original; Branigan took the song to #59.)

Raleigh subsequently moved into the field of artist management and in 2008 he was listed as an owner of the L.A.-based Associated Talent Management (ATM)

Richard Darbyshire--Love Will Provide [1999][L.I.A.B.]

The husky voiced Richard Darbyshire carries the unwanted label of "one-hit wonder" as the former vocalist for Living in a Box. The title is misleading, since his old group had a number of chart successes in the U.K.; nevertheless, the band's career is often summarized by their lone appearance on American radio. Born on March 8, 1960, in Stockport, Cheshire, England, Darbyshire was introduced to the soulful music of Marvin Gaye and Al Green via a U.S. military station while he attended an American school in Japan. Darbyshire briefly joined a group with his American friends, and when he returned to England in the early '80s, he formed the Zu Zu Sharks. The Zu Zu Sharks were signed to EMI and released three singles. "Love Tumbles Down" hit number one in Spain, but Darbyshire was unhappy with the band's pop sound and departed from the group. Darbyshire continued to write songs for himself and singer Tessa Niles, and one of them, "Put Your Foot Down," was even recorded by the Temptations. He also performed session work for Polygram and EMI. In 1985, Virgin Records wanted to sign Darbyshire to a contract, while Chrysalis Records asked him to be the vocalist/guitarist for Living in a Box, a group that heard Darbyshire singing his own material while they were recording demos in the same studio. Darbyshire chose a five-year deal with Living in a Box. The band released their self-titled first LP in 1987, and the funky title-track was an immediate smash on U.S. radio and MTV. While Living in a Box's popularity in America faded quickly, their 1989 album, Gatecrashing, featured two Top Ten hits in the U.K., "Blow the House Down" and "Room in Your Heart." A year later, Chrysalis was purchased by EMI. New label personnel began telling the group to tone down their sound while they were recording their third full-length, and Darbyshire left in disgust before it was completed. In the '90s, Darbyshire penned and co-wrote songs for Marie Claire D'Ubaldo, Level 42, Jennifer Rush, Bing Abrahams, and Lisa Stansfield. Darbyshire's solo debut, How Many Angels, was released in 1994; it was reissued in 1999 as Love Will Provide, with two bonus tracks.

Akimbo Alogo is the first full-length solo album from Canadian singer and guitarist Kim Mitchell. It includes the only song of his to become a hit in the United States, "Go For Soda".

The original cover art for this album was changed upon its release on Compact Disc.

Its first track, "Go for Soda", is Mitchell's best-known song, recently being featured on TV series such as Canada's own Trailer Park Boys, as well as an episode of the popular American animated sitcom, American Dad.

They say talent is genetic, and Joe Vitale Jr., who is the son of drummer extraordinaire Joe Vitale, is no exception. Introduced to the rock and roll life at an early age, Joe Jr. was still in elementary school when he made his debut performance, playing tambourine on stage with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Since then, Joe Jr. has established himself as a singular music machine. A multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer, Joe Jr. shines ever so brightly on his first album, “Dancing With Shadows,” which deftly injects modern pop sensibilities into classic rock scenarios.

Stirring rhythms, complemented by throbbing breaks and tugging hooks tend to characterize the music here. A hypnotic touch is visible throughout, particularly on the title track, which certainly does evoke images of one dancing with shadows. Dark moods, intertwined with rays of light give the material a nice balance. Rumbling keyboards rub shoulders with slaving guitar riffs to the tune of Joe Jr.’s strong and sturdy vocals, which strike a commanding presence. An air of suspense also guides the record, as inventive structures and moments of nervous tension wash over the landscape. “She Intoxicates,” “Mysterious,” “Infectious” and “I Don’t Belong” are just a quick mention of the other gems featured on the disc. “Dancing With Shadows” is a stone cold accomplishment, and it’s only the beginning for Joe Jr., who obviously has an ear for imaginative sights and sounds.

EBN OZN--FEELING CAVALIER [1984] NMR

One of my favorite bands from the 80's.
The oddly named new wave duo EBN-OZN had one novelty hit, "AEIOU Sometimes Y" in 1983, and then lapsed into obscurity. Featuring Ned "EBN" Liben (synthesizer) and Robert "OZN" Rosen (organ, vocals), EBN-OZN was actually an eclectic act that saw no stylistic boundaries, venturing into synth pop, funk, and salsa with giddy enthusiasm. EBN-OZN was formed in New York in the early '80s. Rosen was introduced to Liben by an acquaintance of his girlfriend. Liben and Rosen were actually raised only a few blocks from one another, but they never met. Fans of punk rock and hip-hop, the two began spending time in clubs with one another, absorbing various forms of dance music from New York, Puerto Rico, and Europe. In 1984, EBN-OZN released their only LP, Feeling Cavalier, on Elektra Records. The single "AEIOU Sometimes Y" became a staple on modern rock stations. However, Liben and Rosen were never heard from again after that, at least not together. Liben started working with Scritti Politti while Rosen created the house music outfit DaDa NaDa for his own label One Voice Records. Rosen eventually left the rock business, worked as a script analyst for Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone, and began writing screenplays. Liben passed away from a heart attack in 1998.

The live CD was recorded July 1, 1978 at The Cellar Door and October 8, 1978 at Louie's Rock City (*) by Skip Pizzi.
One of the finest American prog bands. Completely out of the american standards, HAPPY THE MAN combined lush melodies, great complex interplay and a slightly jazzy touch with occasional vocals. The band claims to be influenced by GENESIS, Yes, and GENTLE GIANT although they really do not sound anything like any of those bands.

Their first two albums, the self titled "Happy the Man" and "Crafty Hands" (almost entirely instrumental) are classic albums of the highest order, and are considered by the band to be the definitive releases in their catalogue. These are must haves. A reference point in the 70's US prog scene!

NOTES ON THE MAKING OF RADIO WAVES GOODBYE

About the process: About a year after the release of our last record "Gravity", I had a conversation one day with Joe Bergamini who told me that he had a potential title for our next album. I had been working on some new material at the time as well as reworking some older ideas, and Joe's title, "Radio Waves Goodbye", seemed to perfectly fit the mood of these new songs. I immediately became excited about this direction for the record; suddenly my creative juices were flowing, and a few months later the album's first six tracks, as well as the last two, were complete. At this point Joe and I began a series of informal jam sessions with bassist Frank LaPlaca, which to our delight, yielded three new songs: "Fuse", "Learning to Crawl", and "747". A twelfth song, "Sonata Café", an homage to director Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut", was dropped at the last minute (look for it on a future album), only to be replaced with another affectionate homage: "Memories of Kansas". The album was recorded over the course of about a year at my own New Jersey recording studio, The Den, and features guest performances by many terrific musicians (and good friends), including keyboardist Jimmy Wilgus, saxophonist Bob Magnuson, violinist Karl Kessler, and percussionists Tom Mulvaney and Steve Kelly. Once mixing was completed in late December 2001, we entered the post production phase; Joe began finishing up the album artwork while I worked on the CD mastering, the two of us frequently consulting with one another. The album was officially released on February 1st 2002 amidst many sighs of relief, and the rest is, well, not quite history.

About the songs: I'm a fanatical film lover and was determined to express that obsession more clearly on this record than on the past two. The album's first six tracks were conceived and arranged as a side long piece, a "little movie" if you will, and are intended to be listened through in a single sitting. For years I'd wanted to remake David Bowie classic "Space Oddity" in a distinctly cinematic style, the idea being to create an immersive sonic experience for the listener that directly reflects the lyric, both musically and atmospherically. A fictional backstory for the Major Tom character then served as the framework and impetus for the album's first four songs, and "Burial at Sea" became the epilogue, or unhappy ending (as I like to think of it). The big riffs of the next three tracks were contributed by bassist Frank LaPlaca, and (with some solid input from the rest of us and lots of coffee) helped steer the album in some unexpected directions, touching on swing, ska, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and the blues! "Memories of Kansas", the last song to be written, is my personal homage to the music of Kansas and to the eye-opening experience of being exposed to their influences as a teenager. Both "Descent" and "Radio Waves Goodbye" are drastic rewrites of older songs, and hopefully bring the album to a logical and somewhat sentimental conclusion. I certainly hope our listeners enjoy the material as much we enjoyed creating it, and remember: when in doubt, forget all the talk and just listen. After all, the best and most liberating thing about instrumental music is being able to draw one's own conclusions about what it all might mean.

This is the 1st from them with Joe Bergamini on drums [4front]

One of the finest American prog bands. Completely out of the american standards, HAPPY THE MAN combined lush melodies, great complex interplay and a slightly jazzy touch with occasional vocals. The band claims to be influenced by GENESIS, Yes, and GENTLE GIANT although they really do not sound anything like any of those bands.

Their first two albums, the self titled "Happy the Man" and "Crafty Hands" (almost entirely instrumental) are classic albums of the highest order, and are considered by the band to be the definitive releases in their catalogue. These are must haves. A reference point in the 70's US prog scene!

Even Dave Mason will tell you that his songs have been rehashed and repackaged more times than he can (or cares to) remember. "Feelin' Alright" alone has been covered nearly 50 times and has even been denigrated to the level of car commercials (Nissan, no less!). This latest, however, may in fact be the greatest. Though it only spans 20 years of Mason's self-taught and self-(mis)directed career, this "ultimate" Dave Mason collection includes most of his best-known songs and a number of rarer gems, giving a solid introduction to this oft-misunderstood musician. This compilation shows many sides of Mason: the opening hippie bounce of "You Can All Join In"; the grammatically questionable Delaney and Bonnie-d roots chug of "Only You Know and I Know" (produced by Tommy Li Puma and featuring the likes of Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, and fellow gridlocker Jim Capaldi); the easy dedication and advice of "Can't Stop Worrying, Can't Stop Loving," "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave," and "To Be Free"; the rhythmic undertones of "Look at You Look at Me"; the cowbell-driven shuffle of Let It Go, Let It Flow"; and the quick jangle of "Satin Red and Black Velvet Woman." Though licensing litigation probably prevented inclusion of Mason's collaborations with Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney, the album does include the puzzlingly productive pairing with Cass Elliott ("Walk to the Point") and his 1987 bi-studio pop reunion with Steve Winwood ("Two Hearts"). And what Dave Mason compilation would be complete without his highest-charting hit, "We Just Disagree"? Certainly not this one. After all, it is the "ultimate."

Israeli-born guitarist Oz Noy is a progressive and iconoclastic artist who incorporates a wide array of styles into his own work, including funk, rock, blues, and jazz. Having performed from a young age, Noy was an in-demand studio musician by his early twenties. A move to New York City in 1996 eventually led to tours and session work with such artists as Chris Botti, Toni Braxton, Jeff "Tain" Watts, and others. This was the best record Korner had made since 1962, and featured a core membership of former acolytes--Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, and Ian Stewart. The sound is as much jazz as blues-influenced, it was all cut live on tour of Europe, and nobody involved ever sounded better, happier, or more relaxed. This was both Korner's and Stewart's final effort.

The blue-eyed soul band's third Hot Wax LP continues the soulful grooves paved on two previous long-players. A longstanding Detroit club band, it was widely believed they first cut on Ric Tic Records, but they actually debuted on Jack and Devora Brown's Fortune setup. Leader Jerry Plunk wrote some tracks, with others handled by Hot Wax's electric producing and writing corp. The themes fluctuate from message songs like "I'm Not My Brother's Keeper" to stark love missions like "1200 Miles From Heaven." Additional takes "Sunshine," the acid blues, more than seven minutes long, bonging "Ember's Groove," and "Stop the World and (Let Me Off)" make this a winning package.

Flaming Ember-Westbound #9 [1970] 1st release/

Flaming Ember's name rarely comes up in blue-eye soul discussions, neither Hot Wax nor Ric Tic before them -- where they cut six singles -- never marketed them as such. Many who bought their records simply didn't know or don't care, they liked the heavy soul sound and never gave much thought to their ethnicity. Yet, they were more successful then most of the known blue-eye soul artists and Westbound #9 proves that. Their first Hot Wax recording, "Mind, Body and Soul made noise wherever it was played. The sweet ballad with the rough edge introduced the Detroiters to the world. (The Ric Tic singles were poorly promoted and only received scant air play in the Motor City area.) Another excellent slow single, "Shades of Green" didn't do as well but it gave further credence to their singing prowess. The explosive "Westbound #9 became their biggest seller, the lead singer proved he could wail with the best and was a vocalist to reckon with. Excellent versions of "Going in Circles," and "Spinning Wheel" fit in well with originals like "The Empty Crowded Room," "Why Don't You Stay," "Heart On (Loving You)" "Flashbacks and Reruns" and others.

To a certain extent, retro-swing is always at its best in a live setting, whether it's in a packed club or a concert hall. There it's possible to get swept in the energy of a performance, feeding off the performance of the band and the vibe of the crowd. During the live show, it's all about having a good time, and it's possible not to care about whether the music is derivative if the attitude is smirky and if the musicians are more flash than skilled. And that's why even if retro-swing makes for a good live experience, it doesn't necessarily make for a great live album, because it can fall apart under the scrutiny of a close listen, as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's 2004 double-disc Live illustrates. Containing one 17-track CD and one 17-track DVD, it captures a full set from May 15, 2003. Live finds the band in solid form, running through songs from their three albums. On-stage, they're a little looser than they are in the studio, which means to a certain extent they come across a little bit better, since they sound livelier, but at home, the listener is as removed from the band as he would be with a studio platter. The kinetic energy of the live show falls away, and it reveals that while the musicians can pull of their big-band pastiche they have limited chops as musicians and that their persona is too silly and kitschy to play outside of their fan base. Those fans, however, will likely enjoy this disc since it's crisply produced and professionally performed -- plus, the DVD has a 5.1 Sound mix and a 15-minute documentary chronicling their "Early Years," complete with lots of home video footage -- but this is strictly a release for the fans and the fans alone.

Terry Knight and The Pack-Singles~classic rock

This was sent to me years ago by someone that I think owned a record shop in Michigan. Also 4 full cds of Stars from mich. before they hit it big, etc. Bob Seger, Was Not Was, Ted Nugent.. etc..

Although he did not make enduring music, Terry Knight holds an important place in the history of 1960s and early-'70s Michigan rock as both a performer and an entrepreneur. In the mid-to-late '60s, often recording with the Pack, he had several big hits in Michigan (and smaller ones nationwide), which were usually covers of songs by major and more significant performers, or blatant attempts to ape such performers with derivative original material. Prior to trying his hand at singing and recording, he was also a popular disc jockey on several Michigan-area stations. He is most known, however, for assembling Grand Funk Railroad, which included two members of the Pack, bassist Mark Farner and drummer Don Brewer. In the late '60s and early '70s, Knight served as Grand Funk's producer and manager, although those relationships were severed in 1972.

Knight entered the music industry as a radio DJ while still a teenager in the early '60s, doing stints at Flint's WTAC and then building a big following at CKLW (based in Windsor, Ontario, though actually for the most part serving the Detroit audience). At CKLW he managed to get away with playing the Rolling Stones' "Little Red Rooster" over and over for an hour, in the days when you could still do such things on AM radio. During the early '60s he also began to play guitar, sing, and write music; then at the end of 1964, he quit his CKLW gig to concentrate on music. One account has it that he gave his reason for leaving as planning to move to England to become the sixth Rolling Stone. That didn't happen, and he struggled to build a career in Flint, teaming up with a local band, the Jazz Masters. The Jazz Masters -- with Farner, Brewer, and three other musicians -- became the Pack, who backed Knight on his debut 1965 single, "Tears Come Rollin'." Terry Knight and the Pack didn't ring up big local sales, however, until putting out a faithful cover of the Yardbirds' "Mr. You're a Better Than I."

Over the next year or two Terry Knight and the Pack had several big regional hits on the Lucky Eleven and Cameo-Parkway labels, making number 46 nationally with their biggest single, a cover of Ben E. King's "I (Who Have Nothing)"; there were also a couple of albums. Although Knight did write some of his own songs, these were such transparent rewrites of tunes and approaches used by Bob Dylan, Donovan, P.F. Sloan, the Yardbirds, the Count Five, the Rolling Stones, the Lovin' Spoonful, and others as to be laughable. Perhaps his experience as a radio announcer, which must have required him to cull through dozens of singles on a weekly basis, influenced him in this regard by making him a quick study of current trends. The best of the lot was the corny but moving folk-rock tune "A Change on the Way," another successful regional release.

Further problems that likely hindered a national breakout were Knight's own severe limitations as a vocalist. The anonymous liner notes to the bootleg '60s Michigan rock compilation Michigan Brand Nuggets put it best: "Knight spent the better part of his recording career trying to sound like other artists, having little personality of his own, at least not on record." The problem became especially acute when Knight affected a tough talking-blues or melodramatic narrative spoken delivery (as he did often). The stiff results sounded like nothing so much as a stage manager suddenly pressed into service as a sub for a missing leading man during rehearsal. As for his actual singing, in a similar vein, it sounded like a guide vocal laid down by a colorless producer or manager before the actual singer came in to do his bit.

It therefore made sense then that Knight's biggest success would actually come as a producer and manager. The Pack split from Knight around 1967 or 1968 to play as the Fabulous Pack, with Knight continuing to work for a while as a solo act. He told the Detroit Free Press that he went to London to talk to Paul McCartney about joining Apple Records, which didn't work out. Knight had, however, gained a lot of experience in the studio and also in other dimensions of the business as a songwriter and producer at Cameo-Parkway. In 1968, he put the Pack's Mark Farner and Don Brewer together with bassist Mel Schacher, who had been in ? and the Mysterians. With Farner taking guitar and vocals, Grand Funk Railroad were born.

Knight produced and managed Grand Funk with success until early 1972, when Grand Funk broke off with him. Knight sent the band $60 million worth of lawsuits, and eventually Grand Funk bought him out. Knight also had lesser success during this period as the producer of hard rock-horn band Bloodrock. As is the case with several other Michigan rock artists of the 1960s -- ? and the Mysterians, Bob Seger, and the Rationals -- much of Terry Knight & the Pack's back catalog is tied up by Cameo-Parkway and unlikely to see release on CD reissue, as that label historically has done little with its vaults. Your best bet is looking for the out-of-print LPs, the most comprehensive of which is the obscure early-1970s two-LP retrospective on ABKCO, Mark, Don and Terry 1966-67 (also known as Funk-Off).

In April, the recording of the third album was marred by tension as a result of Morrison's increasing dependence on alcohol, and the rejection of his new epic "The Celebration Of The Lizard" by the other band members. Approaching the height of their popularity, the Doors played a series of outdoor shows that led to frenzied scenes between fans and police, particularly at Chicago Coliseum on May 10.

The band began to branch out from their initial form for their third LP. Because they had exhausted their original repertoire, they began writing new material. Waiting for the Sun became their first #1 LP, and the single "Hello, I Love You" was their second and last US #1 single. In 1968, controversy arose with the release of the "Hello, I Love You" single when the rock press pointed out the song's musical resemblance to The Kinks' 1965 hit, "All Day and All of the Night." Members of the Kinks have concurred with music critics; Kinks guitarist Dave Davies has been known to add snippets of "Hello, I Love You" during live solo performances of "All Day and All of the Night" as a sarcastic commentary on the subject.[6] In concert, Morrison was occasionally dismissive of the song, and left the vocal chores to Manzarek, as can be seen in the documentary The Doors are Open.[7]

A month after riotous scenes took place at the Singer Bowl in New York, the group flew to Britain for its first venue outside of North America. They held a press conference at the ICA Gallery in London and played shows at The Roundhouse Theatre. The results of the trip were broadcast on Granada TV's The Doors Are Open, which was later released on video. They played dates in Europe, along with Jefferson Airplane, including a show in Amsterdam where Morrison collapsed on stage from a drug binge.

Mixing pop-jazz with elements of so-called acid jazz, Brian Tarquin has a decent collection of groove-oriented instrumental music in Last Kiss Goodbye. The CD's main flaw is its excessive production; all too often, Tarquin's appealing, clean-sounding guitar is combined with music that is programmed when it should have been played. Last Kiss Goodbye would have been stronger if it had more of an organic feel and sounded like the work of an actual band instead of a producer's album. But the writing isn't bad, and Tarquin gets in some pleasant solos on such accessible, dusky offerings as "Midnight Blue," "One Arabian Night" and "Crazy Horse." Also likable is the Pat Metheny-ish "California Summer" and Tarquin's interpretation of Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone From the Sun." But while Last Kiss Goodbye has more pluses than minuses, Tarquin is probably capable of a lot more.

he big breakout record for The System — one of the key soul crossover duos of the 80s! By the time of the record, electric instrumentation and studio technology had evolved to a point where a team like Mic Murphy and David Frank could put together a whole mainstream funk record like this on their own — and audiences too were a bit more open to accepting a world of overdubs and multi-track recording, and didn’t need the 10-piece lineup of some of those late 70s groups to help them find their groove! The standout number here is the huge single “You Are In My System” — a cut that’s wonderful in its simplicity, and somehow even better all these many years later, which it seems like less of a commercial crossover track than it did before. Other tracks follow a similar groove, and titles include “Sweat”, “It’s Passion”, “Now I Am Electric”, “Stand Up & Cheer”, and “I Won’t Let Go”. This expanded version combines the original album with six bonus extended remixes — including “Promises Can Break”, “This Is For You”, and “Don’t Disturb This Groove”.

The System-Rhythm & Romance [1989]

Pioneering synth duo the System rode the '80s wave of emerging synth/MIDI music technology to help lay the foundation for contemporary electronic popular music with their upfront, unapologetic use of synths and intelligent songwriting.

In the early '80s, singer Mic Murphy and keyboardist David Frank met in New York. Collecting on studio time that he had bartered for in exchange for playing on sessions, Frank asked Murphy to join him in the studio to work on some ideas. After their overnight session, Murphy took the master tape to an engineer friend that transferred the tape onto a 12" lacquer record. The duo took the record to Atlantic's Mirage Records and were signed right away.

Their 1982 single "You Are in My System" quickly became the rage on both the dancefloor and on urban-formatted radio, leading to the release of Sweat on Mirage/Atlantic. Other tracks from the album got dancefloor attention, such as "Sweat" and "I Can't Let Go." Their next album, X-periment, included the infectious "I Just Want to Make You Feel Good," the sweet ballad "Promises" b/w "X-periment," and the stunningly passionate "I Can't Take Losing You." In 1986, the duo performed the title album track/hit single "The Pleasure Seekers" on Miami Vice. The LP contained "Groove" precursor "This Is for You," which was the second single. 1987 was a great year for the System, giving them their biggest hit. The title track of their album Don't Disturb This Groove went to number one R&B and number three pop. The tune was also used as the basis of one of the last tracks released by Tupac Shakur. The next release, Midnight Lover, cracked the pop Top 20.

Their fresh approach put the System in high demand as producers, songwriters, and musicians. They can be heard on Chaka Khan's cover of Prince's "I Feel for You" and Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" (both million-sellers). The latter record was later used by the Notorious B.I.G. for his gold record "Juicy." The list continues with Phil Collins' "Sussudio," Angela Bofill's "Can't Slow Down," Pauli Carmen's "Dial My Number," Ashford & Simpson, and Jeff Lorber's "Step by Step." They contributed to the movie soundtracks for two Eddie Murphy blockbusters, Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America (the title track went Top Ten pop). Even though it seemed that everyone wanted to work with the System, the pair decided not to spread themselves too thin and turned down a lot of offers. They opened their own recording studio called Science Lab Music.

1989's Rhythm & Romance ("Midnight Special," "Have Mercy," "Soul to Soul") was the duo's last album. During early 1991, Mic Murphy released a solo album on East West called Touch ("Fit to Be Tied"), which had a lot of System overtones. Frank did concert dates backing Annie Lennox during the recording of her Live in Central Park CD and video (Arista). He's also active in production, working with Omar, Dionne Farris, female pop vocal trio Wild Orchid, and Rebbie Jackson.
